Why Attic Insulation is Important
Attic space is often looked at as a storage space, but when properly insulated, it can act as a key barrier to energy loss year-round. In fact, having proper insulation in your entire home, including your attic space, can help lower your energy bills up to 30% per year. Do you have enough insulation in your attic space? If not, it may be time to call the experts in Dayton at The Furnace Man Heating & Cooling, LLC and schedule an appointment.
Reasons to Install Attic Insulation
One of the main principles of heating and cooling is that heat always rises. This means that during the winter, the heat in your home will naturally move upward; if your attic space isn’t well insulated, a good portion of the heat meant for your living spaces will flow into your attic space. A second principle of heating and cooling is that heat will always seek out cold; this is known as heat transfer, and the main job of any insulation is to slow heat transfer. What this means is that during the winter months, heat will not only rise, it will actively work to balance the air temperature by seeking cold air spots. Attic space is typically cold because it isn’t an area with a heating outlet, so this is where the heat from your home will go – unless your home has the right amount of insulation to stop the transfer.
The same problem happens in reverse during the summer months when you have poor attic insulation: the temperatures can soar in your attic space, reaching an excess of 150 degrees. This heat needs to go somewhere and it will seek out the cooler areas of your home. But with the right amount of insulation, a barrier is created so that the attic air doesn’t transfer into your home.
Other reasons to insulate your attic include:
- Protection attic from damage from mold and mildew
- Protect roofing materials
- Improve comfort
