Why Won’t My Furnace Turn On?

Why Won’t My Furnace Turn On?

  • Heating

The last thing that you want to happen when you need heat is to have your furnace fail to start. Don’t panic, though. You don’t necessarily have to replace your furnace. There are a few different factors that could contribute to a furnace refusing to turn on. Depending on the specific symptoms, it should be pretty easy to narrow down the possibilities for what is causing your furnace to malfunction. Of course, you’ll need to have a professional look at your system to know for certain. Let’s take a look at some of the common reasons why your furnace won’t turn on.

Air Handler Failure

When your furnace fails to start, pay close attention to what actually is or is not working. Are the burners lit, but the fan isn’t running? If so, you have an air handler problem. The air handler is that part of the furnace that is responsible for actually circulating air throughout the house. There are two main parts to the air handler, the motor, and the fan. The motor is one of the hardest working parts of your furnace and is put under a great deal of stress while the air handler is running. To help deal with this stress, the motor is equipped with lubricated bearings to keep it running smoothly. As the bearings wear down, however, the burner will begin to work harder and harder until it eventually burns out. It is also possible that an electrical short has deprived the air handler of power. You’ll need to call a professional to find out.

Ignition Failure

Ignition failure is far more common than air handler failure and is characterized by the burners failing to light. The burner assembly is the part of the furnace that actually consumes fuel to generate heat. There are all sorts of reasons for a furnace to fail to ignite. It is possible that your actual ignition system is malfunctioning, as when a pilot light blows out or a heating element needs replacing. However, it is also possible that the burners themselves are experiencing some sort of problem, like a blockage in the gas line. If your furnace doesn’t seem to be turning on at all, you probably have an ignition problem.
